Perioperative organ injury is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in surgical patients. Among different types of perioperative organ injury, acute kidney injury occurs particularly frequently and has an exceptionally detrimental effect on surgical outcomes. Here, we will discuss the role of hypoxia-signaling and hypoxia-inducible transcription factors, and discuss novel therapeutic concepts based on laboratory research and a recent clinical trial.
