This presentation explores the special considerations for athletes undergoing anesthesia, with a focus on the physiological role of vitamin D and the impact of its deficiency on anesthesia and postoperative recovery.
Common nutritional issues among athletes include insufficient caloric intake, deficiencies in vitamin D and B vitamins, imbalanced nutrient ratios, and dehydration. Vitamin D deficiency is particularly prevalent among strength-based athletes, potentially linked to training environments, muscle reserves, and utilization rates.
Studies indicate that low vitamin D levels can affect muscle strength and prolong the reversal time of anesthetic agents such as Sugammadex, thereby extending extubation time and recovery duration. Furthermore, preoperative vitamin D status is closely associated with postoperative complications, including respiratory issues, impaired bone healing, increased pain, and heightened infection risk. Regarding long-term outcomes, preoperative vitamin D level is more predictive than postoperative status. Benefits derived from perioperative vitamin D supplementation are limited.
Overall, vitamin D plays a critical role in anesthesia management for athletes and should be incorporated into preoperative assessments and nutritional intervention strategies.
